A weekend away at Kromrivier, in the beautiful Cederberg...

Kromrivier, in the Cederberg. A place where I'm soothed every time I visit. Last weekend Lateral Paul & I took our boys up to Kromrivier for two nights. It's not often that all four of us manage to successfully sync our schedules these days so it was completely amazing to spend time together in a place that sits deep in all of our souls.

We started taking our kids to Kromrivier in 1998 for our annual holiday. Luke was around 4 years old. We'd go for 10 days every February until school got in the way and we had to shift to going over the much busier Christmas time.

The 50km drive on the dirt road might be a drag for some but it's one of the highlights for us. It's about the journey, not just the destination, as they say. We drove through the high and winding Nieuwoudt Pass, past Algeria, the Wolfberg Cracks in the vast expanse of the Cederberg Wilderness area, past Dwarsrivier,  and spectacular landscapes with weird and wonderful sculpted rocks in dramatic hues of burnt orange and brown. And then there was that moment when we rounded the final corner on the mountain top and looked way down onto the farm in the middle of the fertile valley below. "We're all going on a summer holiday, no more working for a week or two..." sometimes we still sing it as we arrive at this haven, in one of the most remarkable parts of the Western Cape.

So what is it that's so alluring about Kromrivier in the Cederberg Tourist Park? For me, it's the aromatic, sweet smell of fynbos, the impossibly blue sky, rugged terrain, waterfalls, crystal clear rock pools, weaver birds, dragonflies bopping and weaving over the surface of the rivers, and that amazing dry heat- up to 35 degrees- the kind that hovers around your body in an inexplicably amazing way.

As soon as we arrived, we stopped as usual at the  farmhouse to say hello to the wonderful Rinda Nieuwoudt, collected our key, hugged Boeta, the huge white Anatolian shepherd dog, and headed off to Tafelberg cottage, one of our two favourite places to stay, with Winterbach being the other.

Once unpacked, my watch got relegated to the depths of my handbag, and all cellphones were turned off. Happiness is... no wifi, except at the farm, if you're truly desperate for an Instagram fix (who, me?).

And slowly, calmness descends. It's just you and Nature, sitting with a cup of coffee and a rusk on the stoep, watching the wind move across the water, rustling the leaves of the trees from one side of the dam to the other, like a Mexican wave.

And then there's all that napping. Relaxation replaces stress. The only schedule is eat, read, sleep, swim and repeat. Come late afternoon, we pop the cork on a bottle of cab sav, flick the caps off a few bottles of locally brewed craft beer (Ceder Brew) and sit around the fire waiting for the coals to settle down for the braai.

Night time brings its own theatre - the black sky shows off bright galaxies and shooting stars make you feel like heaven is sending you a message.

I can't explain how much I love this tiny part of the Cederberg. It's a place where my heart expands and I regain perspective. We all feel that way- it's a tonic for us.

I miss it already.

Hong Island, Krabi Province, Thailand

Another breathtakingly beautiful discovery on our Thai adventure...Hong Island, about 20 minutes from Aonang Beach via speedboat (an hour by long tail). The island has one beach, Pelay, with pristine white sand that shows off the emerald green of the water of the bay that is enclosed by tall limestone formations protruding out of the sea. Just exquisite & relatively quiet compared to the madness of Koh Phi Phi as hundreds of tourists head there every day. The Hong Island tour also takes in a few other gorgeous islands like Daeng Island, Lading & Pakbia, each as stunning as the one before. Snorkeling was amazing on Daeng and Pelay...the brightly coloured fish come close - they brushed past my goggles & took bread from my hand....it's an incredible experience, especially for a first timer. Again, I recommend Barracuda Tours - all their info is online.

Luke, back at school for an award

There stands Son No. 1 in the corridor at Camps Bay High. He was back there yesterday to receive a certificate for placing in the school's top 5 for Matric 2012. A fab moment for him & for me of course. Oscar, Son No. 2 also went up for his award for placing 7th in his Grade at the end of 2012. Mazeltov guys, so proud!

Luke turns 19!

What?! How fast did we get to this day? My eldest boy is 19 today! We did lunch at Hudson's Burgers (Bleh- People from Afar rather try the Dogs Bollocks or Clarke's for your burgers)- it was Luke's choice, followed by pizza at Colcacchio which is always fabulous ( the one in town remains the firm favourite)...

One good thing about Hudson's, their milkshakes- amaze! And large!

Artichoke Feast- a Family Tradition

Ever since our boys were little, we've had these artichoke feasts, usually only once or twice a year. The fresh product is best bought from everyone's favourite grocer, Woolworths, & once cooked, we serve on a huge platter & dip the fleshy leaves & soft hearts in an olive oil, lemon, salt & garlic mix - we go at it until just a vast pile of stripped leaves remains...try it, you'll love it.

New Years Eve, 2012. Cape Town.

Last night, we did an early dinner at Harbour House at the Waterfront. The setting is superb & the food is excellent. Between us we had sushi, tiger prawns & rack of lamb, all so tasty. After the meal, we watched the movie End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhall. It was very good but so violent & left me feeling upset...the cruelty of the Cartels operating in South Side LA etc was unbelievable & terrifying. I tell you, if I was living in LA, the good areas, & had that level of gangsterism & madness seething a few km's away, I'd leave the city. Anyway, after the film, we hoped to grab coffee somewhere & hang out until the fireworks display but things didn't quite go to plan. There were thousands of people cramming the Waterfront by the time we left the movie house- we could hardly move- so we opted to head home & Paul took Luke back at 11:30 to watch the fireworks & then collect Son no 2 who'd been at the Waterfront with friends. Also, last night we had gale force winds hammering the city & waterfront so it was just unpleasant all round. I slept through the midnight moment!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE- may 2013 bring you astonishing good health, inner peace & much joy !

Casa Diva!

I made a few tasty dishes 2 nights ago, which, if you knew me, is always quite a surprise as up until very recently, I've not been very at home in la cuccina! These 2 meals turned out well- a wedge of Norwegian salmon on a bed of mixed baby lettuce, with blackberries, sprouts & a creamy chive dressing; & a small steak on a bed of wilted spinach, with pan fried baby tomatoes in crema vinegrette & a buttery sauce. Husband & Son no 1 were duly impressed!

Boxing Day ...

Every Boxing Day that G-d gives, we go to my late Dad's sister for a Braai (South African for barbeque) & reconnect with lots of family members we generally seldom see. It's great! This year my cousin from Vancouver was there & we'd not seen him in 23 years! It's always very festive!
